At my job, I find it very interesting how they keep pressing us to become “Project Management Professionals.” This is a certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is starting to become like any other certification. I say that because people are now starting to weight having this certification way to heavily. That is to say just because you have the certification does not mean you are going to be any more successful being a project manager. With the people, I have seen with the certification all it has proved thus far is that they were able to regurgitate information, not apply it.
The other thing is that all of our managers are recommending that we become certified. It sounds like to me it will soon be a condition of employment. If that is the case, then they should also support the additional cost that come with the certification. You have to maintain Profession Development Units (PDUs) so you will not have to retake the exam. How do you get these? Well, you get them by having to take courses that cost time and money, and you can also earn them at various functions of the local PMI chapters. Once again, these activities cost money. Did I mention you also have dues associated with PMI, and then you have does for the local PMI chapters and Special Interest Groups? Eh…So, I am still not quite sure how this works but it sure sounds like a cash cow to me. It also sounds like my management is endorsing this cash cow at this point. Well, if they are I want to be sure they foot the bill and not me. I am well under paid as is.
Do not get me wrong though. I believe the PMI is a good for project management as a whole. Yes, you need to keep your project management skills up to day just as any other skill. But all I am saying is does it have to cost so much? And why should my work environment also encouragage us to get this certification? Do they not understand if you get this type of encouragement from upper management it is no different than being a mandate? While they are encouraging us to get these certifications, they need to be focusing on the contractors needing these certifications and more considering what happens there…
We will see how this works out…
Cheers!
