At it again
Aug 23rd, 2009 by site admin

I cannot believe they are at it again.  I have almost completed a project which I believe was the wrong approach to solving a problem.  However, I was given orders.  What makes it so bad, is that our main technology person endorsed this.  I also complained about the approach not addressing reliability and availability.   THEY INDICATED WE WOULD ADDRESS THAT AT LATER.  However, when people began to attack and criticize what the PM had not done this person was the first amongst the pack.  This project has basically been done with no funding support, no management support, and more importantly I controlled none of the resources.  Same old story.

I will have to compose my PM manifesto. :-)  We are never appreciated.

Nearing Production :)

Well, my two huge projects are close to production deployment. WooHoo! I am going to take leave leading up to the final week of the deployments. i have done all that I can at this point. Now it is up to the others to make it happen.

I am now going through all of the checks and working the final issues. I will make my deployment date whether we are at 90% or 100%. It has to be done.

Cheers!

Well, I finally got it done. I forced myself because my credentials to get certified were expiring. *Laughs* It is a major load off my shoulders at this point considering all of the project within projects I have going on a this time.

Cheers!

Work can get to you

I find it utterly amazing how people focus on negative things. This makes me more appreciative of how my parents raised. They taught me you can do whatever you want to do. These people spend more time wanting to talk the things we have not done in our projects, but they never say hey you are headed on the right path. Or, Hey! No one else has tried to do this like we asked. You are doing great. I believe they are sour persimmons because they did not think of it; thefore, they cannot take credit for it.

You are not limited by yourself, but you limit yourself.

This is not the way to live life. Do you have this same issue at your job?

Ho Hum Day.

I know I have not written anything in quite a while. But work has kept me so swamped that I have not had time for anything else. Well, I am finally coming up for some air before I go down again. Things are really tough at work right now. I am not sure if it is just me, or are we too busy to focus on anything. It appears that currently what is important to me is not important to the other members of our team. This gets to be a major issue. Common focus is needed in order to complete any project, and right now we do not have that. I am really worried at this point, but I am not sure how to address it. Perhaps, it is me that is the issue on the project…perhaps. I feel I will be writing quite a bit about this project.

Cheers!

Hmm..The clock is ticking.

At my job, I find it very interesting how they keep pressing us to become “Project Management Professionals.” This is a certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is starting to become like any other certification. I say that because people are now starting to weight having this certification way to heavily. That is to say just because you have the certification does not mean you are going to be any more successful being a project manager. With the people, I have seen with the certification all it has proved thus far is that they were able to regurgitate information, not apply it.

The other thing is that all of our managers are recommending that we become certified. It sounds like to me it will soon be a condition of employment. If that is the case, then they should also support the additional cost that come with the certification. You have to maintain Profession Development Units (PDUs) so you will not have to retake the exam. How do you get these? Well, you get them by having to take courses that cost time and money, and you can also earn them at various functions of the local PMI chapters. Once again, these activities cost money. Did I mention you also have dues associated with PMI, and then you have does for the local PMI chapters and Special Interest Groups? Eh…So, I am still not quite sure how this works but it sure sounds like a cash cow to me. It also sounds like my management is endorsing this cash cow at this point. Well, if they are I want to be sure they foot the bill and not me. I am well under paid as is.

Do not get me wrong though. I believe the PMI is a good for project management as a whole. Yes, you need to keep your project management skills up to day just as any other skill. But all I am saying is does it have to cost so much? And why should my work environment also encouragage us to get this certification? Do they not understand if you get this type of encouragement from upper management it is no different than being a mandate? While they are encouraging us to get these certifications, they need to be focusing on the contractors needing these certifications and more considering what happens there…

We will see how this works out…

Cheers!
